Visions of Another World (Saturday 10th April)
Saturday, April 3rd, 2004The ECF Presents Visions of Another World (Saturday 10th April)
In light of the ongoing successes of the World and European Social Forums, and the repeated calls for an increase in their cultural content, the European Creative Forum has been set up to promote art as a medium for expressionthat goes beyond the limitation of language.
The ECF will actively complement and extend the forums and discussions ofthe UK-ESF. It will provide a space for experimental testing ground that encourages, builds and strengthens artistic and cultural networks towards
a collaboration of culture, creation, colour, fun and festivities during the UK-ESF.
The events will be free to attend, but donations on entry are encouraged. Funds raised will to be used to support and enable individuals and groups from across Europe to participate in the UK-ESF. This succession of events will address the links between culture and issues such as human rights, education, equality, poverty and others on the agenda of the UK-ESF utilising an array of artistic activities from music and mime; painting and poetry; dance and debate; theatre, talk and others such as cinema, seminars and workshops. Area 10
Situated in the heart of Peckham, South East London, Area 10 is a multi-disciplinary creative hub, with members and guests fusing practices of dance, music, installation, painting, sculpture, sampling, photography, circus and live art.
The term ‘Area 10′ can refer both to activities taking place at the old Whitten’s Timber building and to the group engaging in the process. Area 10 is an ongoing event structure, sometimes open to the public and sometimes not. Events are uncurated and possibly uncuratable and the group embraces both its coherence and incoherence.
Area 10 has now worked collectively with over 150 national and international artists over its nearly 2 year life span. Those wanting to join the group have made proposals, and decisions are taken collectively at weekly meetings.
Area 10 is unfunded and currently has no licence from Southwark Council to work in the building. Camberwell Arts is faced with bankruptcy due to a £60,000 business rates bill for Area 10’s occupancy of the site, despite the fact that Area 10 has provided security for the site for approaching two years and is non-profit making.
Area 10 is pleased to host The European Creative Forum with ‘the visions of another world’, on the 10th of April an awareness and benefit event for the European Social Forum, which comes to London in October.
